Every year, plenty of Houston-area teams battle for UIL State Titles, and regularly have success.

Magnolia West ended up getting the best of its district-mate Magnolia for the last postseason spot. The Mustangs bring back experience. Shannon Dworaczyk is one of the key returners for the ‘Stangs after recording 663 assists, 314 digs and 170 kills in her freshman campaign. That’s right, she did that as a freshman.

What a crazy year 2020 was for Texas High School Volleyball. Needville was unbelievable in Class 4A, while Fulshear reached the state title match in Class 5A. In Class 6A, it was wild as two Houston-area schools reached the state title match with Seven Lakes winning their first-ever title. With the season in the books, it's time to name the All-VYPE team and hand out the postseason accolades. The Team, Coach and Player of the Year Awards will be announced during the 2021 VYPE Awards in June!

Bridgeland fell to Cypress Ranch in a big loss while Oak Ridge rolled Grand Oaks to get back in the Top 10. Memorial has a big week facing Stratford and Cy-Fair, while George Ranch faces Ridge Point for the district title. The Woodlands face Oak Ridge and up and comer Grand Oaks. Foster hung on to beat Hightower in a 35-34 nail-biter, while Lake Creek knocked off formerly ranked Fulshear 39-7. Manvel bounced back after losing to North Shore to beat ranked Angleton 49-28. As Klein and Friendswood remain constants, the rest of the volleyball landscape in Houston is a little bumpy. The Woodlands lost back-to-back matches last week to St. Agnes and Klein, allowing for Seven Lakes, Dawson and George Ranch to gain ground in the Top 5. Grand Oak moves back into the Class 6A Top 10. 1 but just lost to Episcopal. However, St. Agnes beat Episcopal during the same round-robin.

An experienced senior group is back, headed by Addison Stevenson, who finished ninth overall with a time of 18:06.58. If Tompkins can push a few more girls into the Top 30 spots, they could contend for a higher team finish. The team finished 13th overall at last year's state meet but do return some experience. OTHERS TO WATCH: Huffman FalconsHuffman finished ninth overall at the UIL State Cross Country meet last year. They do lose two senior runners but return three more harriers with experience.

GIRLS PLAYER OF THE YEAR NOMINEE- Carly Ahrens, KingwoodCarly Ahrens took eighth overall at the 2019 UIL Class 6A State Cross Country Meet. The freshman posted the best time on the Kingwood cross country team, which finished second overall just behind Southlake Carroll. BOYS PLAYER OF THE YEAR NOMINEE- Spencer Cardinal, The WoodlandsThe Woodlands' Spencer Cardinal finished 3rd overall at the UIL State Cross Country Meet.
