This week’s KPRC 2 and UTMB Health Athlete of the Week is Kingwood golfer Bella Flores. Flores, a senior, is headed to the 6A state tournament for the fourth time and is hoping to bring home a trophy this year.

Just three months after appearing in the 6A Division I State Championship game, the North Shore High School football community faced unspeakable tragedy.

We’ve reached the final week of the soccer season and two wins are all that separate Ridge Point from a 6A state championship.

This past weekend, the UIL Cross Country meet concluded with several Houston-area teams placing in the Top 10 state-wide.

AUSTIN – Summer Creek is entering an exclusive club.

Seven Lakes’ District 19-6A game against Mayde Creek on Friday night was not only consequential locally but held statewide ramifications as well.

Southlake responded late in the second quarter to tie the game at 21, but Westlake went on a methodical, 5-minute drive to go up 28-21. The Harlan Boys Soccer team looks to be fierce on the perch this season. The move up from 5A to 6A doesn't seem to phase the Hawks much as they have come out "kickin'". Jumping into 6A District 29, with teams like Warren and O'Connor, Harlan will have some tough matchups to play, but the team is already proving to be ready. Taking a big 5-0 scrimmage win against a tough Clemens team, we can expect a lot from these players. Be on the lookout for Cameron Burleson, Tomas Olivares, Devin Hammel, Dominic Pena, and Jacob Olivares.

Westlake vs North Shore, Goliath vs Goliath. Galena Park North Shore, the two-time Division I State Champs, vs the Division II State Champs Austin Westlake. North Shore, led by Auburn signee Demetrius Davis and Texas A&M Signee Shadrach Banks, ran into a stingy Westlake defense that kept the explosive North Shore offense in check. Westlake ends the reign of North Shore and will face Southlake Carroll in the 6A Division I State Championship game on Saturday at AT&T Stadium. The State Championship will be a House Divided, as Westlake Head Coach Todd Dodge will face his dad Riley Dodge, who helms the ship at Southlake Carroll.

After a great 2020 season was cut short, the Churchill Chargers are looking to be back and better this year. The boys soccer team from Churchill is explosive, aggressive, and looking to be the district champions of 2021. Although the Chargers are in a very tough 6A district (district 28) with LEE, Reagan and Madison we still expect some big results from these players. Coming out of the box hot this preseason, the New Braunfels Canyon Boys Soccer team looks to make a big impression. With a drop-down from 6A to 5A, the team should be able to perform well and make a deep run in the playoffs. Teamed up in 5A District 26 with teams like Seguin, Boerne Champion and Alamo Heights, the Cougars have already proven to be ready to compete. With some top returners this year like first team all district senior, Luke Suarez-Pella, Second Team All district members, Owen Feagler and Peyton Foytik and honorable mention all district Zeke Antampi. Big Athletes & Big Performances from some local "smaller school" UIL girls basketball teams!! As defined by UIL, 4A schools are considered smaller schools, but we should still expect BIG results from these teams. Having only dropped one game to another tough small school opponent, Devine High school, we continue to see big points on the board and some tough defense. La Vernia High SchoolA continued growth and development of girls basketball has taken place at La Vernia High School. And just like that we're down to the final two weekends of the Texas high school football season. With Ewers' career day, Brady Boyd also had a career day with 17 receptions for 261 yards and 4 touchdowns. Cedar Hill Escapes with OT Win Over HeathCedar Hill 27, Rockwall-Heath 24If everything could go wrong for Cedar Hill on offense, it pretty much did. Cedar Hill had three opportunities in the fourth quarter with the game tied at 21 to end it in regulation. With the win, Cedar Hill is in the semifinals and will play Denton Guyer in at 1 p.m. Saturday at McKinney ISD Stadium.

TAPPS DIVISION I CHAMPIONSHIPFort Worth Nolan Catholic (8-0) vs. Dallas Parish Episcopal (9-1)It's a rematch from when these two teams met at the end of November, and it was a tale of two halves between these two. Parish, the defending state champion, jumped out to a 14-0 halftime lead and looked all the part of the No. Southwest Christian is on a five-game win streak and in the semifinals after just getting past is district rival in Fort Worth Christian last week. Dallas Christian is on a tear this year, just rolling through every opponent it has played. No team has scored more than 16 points on Dallas Christian this year, and it's "closest" win this year was last week by 28 points.

The local talent here in San Antonio for girls basketball continues to show as these teams compete against each other. Judson, Brandeis and Clark remain undefeated in 6A having taken on stiff competition. Reagan and Johnson have only lost to Judson and Steele, proving our top 6 to be TOUGH and keeping those ranking spots still in tact. Clark and Brandeis will face off Wed. December 9, in what we expect to be a great matchup! New Braunfels Canyon proves to be a tough contender this year as well having played some tough 6A teams already, and only dropping to Champion by 4.

San Antonio Christian Lion Basketball has consistently been a threat in its respective TAPPS Classification, and the move to 6A doesn't scare the Lions. Having played new local district opponents Antonian and Central Catholic many times in the recent years, SACS knows the hard work and dedication it is going to take to earn another shot at the playoffs this year. Led by Head Coach - John Valenzuela, San Antonio's second most winningest coach, the Lions are under great leadership. Coach Val will be looking to his leaders for a great season and having only lost one senior from last year's roster, the Lions will standout with Eli Pritz, Noah Cyrus, James Galloway, Will McGilvray and Dean Umstead.

The Woodlands Christian Academy moves up a classification after winning the TAPPS 4A State Championship last spring. It's early, but the Warriors are up to their winning ways again - beating 6A power Concordia Lutheran on Tuesday 63-59 to go 5-1 on the season. Check out a VYPE Gallery by Justin Hartojo.

On the year, Timber Creek is averaging 31 points a game but has only scored 40 points in the last two games. On the year, Eaton is averaging 33 points per game and 38.2 points per game during district play. Playoffs in 4A and below are a week old, and we're nearing the end of the 6A, 5A and private school regular seasons. Because of this pandemic-caused overlap in schedules, there's a lot to unpack from this past week, but here are five of the most keen observations. TAPPS Playoffs Will Be FunParish Episcopal won a very entertaining state title rematch with Plano John Paul II a couple weeks ago. This past week, Fort Worth Nolan took down Parish in a 1-vs-2 matchup, scoring 31 unanswered points. Well it did Friday night against a state-ranked team, which should serve notice of what to expect come playoff time.

For this week, we reached out to each team's head coach to get what was most important for their respective team to focus on this week (not all coaches responded by publishing time). Plano West, however, is off to a surprising 2-1 start under first-year head coach Tyler Soukup. Plano West head coach Tyler Soukup said this main focus: "We have to continue to play tough defense and rush the football with success." Ryan head coach Dave Henigan said the main focus: "We just need to get better and focus on ourselves. Burleson head coach Jon Kita said the main focus: "Don't focus on winning Focus on doing our job one play at a time."

Despite losing their six starters from last season, the Lady Sharks have demonstrated an incredible amount of potential in such a small amount of time. Coach Whitney Daniel returns for her fifth season as head coach of the Lady Sharks, having built the program from the ground up since the school's opening in 2016. It's been a couple days since the games of the 6A and 5A games concluded, so here are some thoughts and insights from the week that was. After losing said receiver and three others, the question was how Locke would fair with an entirely new receiving corps. Locke only passed for 424 yards accounted for five total touchdowns on night against Denton Braswell. In 15 games last year, Locke averaged nearly 300 yards a game and 3.5 touchdowns. Friday's game was just more of the same from Locke, who could be the best junior quarterback in the area.

Volleyball is up and going with district and non-district matches being played. San Antonio's UIL 5A and 6A teams are already proving to be very competitive. Last week, the University Interscholastic League announced its plans for the fall sports. Class 4A and below would begin on time, while Class 5A and 6A are slated to start a month later than they would normally. KPRC Channel 2 Sports Director Randy McIlvoy caught up with UIL Deputy Director Dr. Jamey Harrison recently to discuss the UIL's decision and the fluidity of the situation as we move forward. KATY, Texas – A new high school football season begins Aug. 27-Aug. 29 and the Houston area is once again loaded with talent. At Katy High School, the Tigers have a storied history with seven state championships. Katy reached the 6A title game in 2013 and again in 2014 but both ended with emotional losses to Cedar Hill. The Tigers have the talent again to make another run, and KPRC Channel 2 Sports Director Randy McIlvoy has more on the Tigers as they opened workouts Monday.
