Last year, Houston had five teams make the UIL State Volleyball Tournament in Class 6A, 5A and 4A. Katy Tompkins came the closest to a title, reaching the Class 6A State Championship before falling short to Dripping Springs.

Lake Creek kept their undefeated season alive with an 8-2 win over Rock Hill and will face the winner of Georgetown and Aledo for the 5A title on Saturday. Take a look at some of the shots from the action.

There is a solid chance Fort Bend ISD will have a district all to itself when the UIL releases its biannual realignment Thursday morning.

The light at the regular season tunnel is growing bigger and bigger. UIL district certifications are in 13 days and the playoffs begin four days later; TAPPS playoffs begin next week.

The final week of the UIL basketball season is here. Just two more days of tip-offs in the 2020-21 season with all of the State Semifinals taking place on Tuesday night all across the state and the State Championships taking place later in the week on Friday and Saturday. The greater DFW area has seven teams in play for a possible five state championships. Just two more tip-offs remain in the UIL girls basketball season. The Final Four is here and the DFW is primed to take home another healthy helping of state championships after capturing the top two in the state a season ago. RED OAKAfter finishing second in their district with a 23-5 overall record (11-1 in district), the Red Oak Lady Hawks are headed to the UIL 5A state quarterfinals. With a four-game win streak, Red Oak has been consistent in their strength on the court all season. HIGHLAND PARKAdWith a 1st place finish in their district and an undefeated district record (14-0), the Highland Park Lady Scots are more poised than ever to face off in the quarterfinals. Fans can expect to see a physical game as Highland Park looks to advance to the semifinals.

The Harlan Boys Soccer team looks to be fierce on the perch this season. The move up from 5A to 6A doesn't seem to phase the Hawks much as they have come out "kickin'". Jumping into 6A District 29, with teams like Warren and O'Connor, Harlan will have some tough matchups to play, but the team is already proving to be ready. Taking a big 5-0 scrimmage win against a tough Clemens team, we can expect a lot from these players. Be on the lookout for Cameron Burleson, Tomas Olivares, Devin Hammel, Dominic Pena, and Jacob Olivares.

Coming back from winter break, and the NEISD Basketball shut down, and we are deep into District play. The top six for 6A are holding true to their rankings, and Boerne Champion still sits at the top of 5A, but we can be on the lookout for some shake ups in the second half district play. Coming out of the box hot this preseason, the New Braunfels Canyon Boys Soccer team looks to make a big impression. With a drop-down from 6A to 5A, the team should be able to perform well and make a deep run in the playoffs. Teamed up in 5A District 26 with teams like Seguin, Boerne Champion and Alamo Heights, the Cougars have already proven to be ready to compete. With some top returners this year like first team all district senior, Luke Suarez-Pella, Second Team All district members, Owen Feagler and Peyton Foytik and honorable mention all district Zeke Antampi. A tough 5A contender that went 15-3 in the 2020 season is the Alamo Heights boys soccer team. The Mules continually are a threat in soccer, and we should expect nothing different in this 2021 season. Senior, Austin Auber will also be a threat for the Mules having earned second-team all-district honors last year as well. This year's alignment has the Mules in 5A District 26, with tough teams like Canyon and Boerne-Champion. Looking to come out of the district as the top seed, the Mules will continue to put in the work on and off the field!

It was another wild day at Globe Life Park with three differently, interesting games that unfolded. Aledo SurvivesThe talk around the Aledo team is that it was a down year. Denton Ryan and Highland Park. Except the game didn't really meet those loft expectations as Ryan (13-0) won a defensive struggle and kept Highland Park (11-1) under control for 95 percent of the game. Having downed Highland Park and every other challenger, Ryan is two steps away from completing its mission of "State or Bust."

Some pieces are shifting as we are getting into district play and continuing the competitive pre season schedules. Clark Girls take Brandeis' undefeated record away with a big win last week, and Judson remains on top. For 5A, Boerne Champion will remain number one with only one loss on the season. With winter break here, and NEISD cancelling all basketball games until at least January 4, here are the current standings! TAPPS DIVISION I CHAMPIONSHIPFort Worth Nolan Catholic (8-0) vs. Dallas Parish Episcopal (9-1)It's a rematch from when these two teams met at the end of November, and it was a tale of two halves between these two. Parish, the defending state champion, jumped out to a 14-0 halftime lead and looked all the part of the No. Southwest Christian is on a five-game win streak and in the semifinals after just getting past is district rival in Fort Worth Christian last week. Dallas Christian is on a tear this year, just rolling through every opponent it has played. No team has scored more than 16 points on Dallas Christian this year, and it's "closest" win this year was last week by 28 points.

It's been a little bit since we unveiled our 6A, 5A, 4A, 3A and private school preseason power rankings. Many teams have hit double digits in games played, and before too long, district play will be upon us. In the last round, Paris defeated another 7-4A DI running mate, Melissa, in a high-scoring game that totaled 103 points. In the last round, Graham took down Aubrey in a rain-soaked contest at Globe Life Park. Conversely, two of Jim Ned's playoff games have been decided by three points, which included a 19-16 win over Brock last week. PREVIEWING KELLER TIMBER CREEK (4-4, 2-2)Late in the season, you always want to be playing meaningful football, and Keller Timber Creek is in that situation in the regular season finale. On the year, Timber Creek is averaging 31 points a game but has only scored 40 points in the last two games. On the year, Eaton is averaging 33 points per game and 38.2 points per game during district play. PREVIEWING THE GAMEAs foreshadowed earlier, this game has much more meaning to Timber Creek than it does to Eaton. Playoffs in 4A and below are a week old, and we're nearing the end of the 6A, 5A and private school regular seasons. Because of this pandemic-caused overlap in schedules, there's a lot to unpack from this past week, but here are five of the most keen observations. TAPPS Playoffs Will Be FunParish Episcopal won a very entertaining state title rematch with Plano John Paul II a couple weeks ago. This past week, Fort Worth Nolan took down Parish in a 1-vs-2 matchup, scoring 31 unanswered points. Well it did Friday night against a state-ranked team, which should serve notice of what to expect come playoff time.

Plano West, however, is off to a surprising 2-1 start under first-year head coach Tyler Soukup. Despite losing their six starters from last season, the Lady Sharks have demonstrated an incredible amount of potential in such a small amount of time. Coach Whitney Daniel returns for her fifth season as head coach of the Lady Sharks, having built the program from the ground up since the school's opening in 2016. It's been a couple days since the games of the 6A and 5A games concluded, so here are some thoughts and insights from the week that was. After losing said receiver and three others, the question was how Locke would fair with an entirely new receiving corps. Locke only passed for 424 yards accounted for five total touchdowns on night against Denton Braswell. In 15 games last year, Locke averaged nearly 300 yards a game and 3.5 touchdowns. Friday's game was just more of the same from Locke, who could be the best junior quarterback in the area.
