BREAKING: Yates breaks National Record, Scores 100-plus for 16th-straight game (w/video)

HOUSTON - The record fell in true Jack Yates fashion.

Off a steal, a long heave down the court was too far. Darryl Brown kept it from going out of bounds by tossing it back to Marc-Anthony Batts while mid-air. Batts stopped and jumped up for the two-handed aggressive slam dunk, which brought the crowd, including Mayor of Houston Sylvester Turner, to their feet. It came with one minute and 40 seconds left in the third quarter.

"Our crowd is special," Yates coach Greg Wise said. "They back us as well as anybody in the country in terms of being there for us. For them to see that and then for the kids to enjoy it and for us to know we still have some things to do, it felt good."

It's kind of ironic there were 40 seconds on the clock, considering the last time Jack Yates broke this record it had stood for 40 years.

It didn't take 40 years for someone to break the record again - instead it just took a decade and another Jack Yates team. With the slam, it pushed the score to 101-47, breaking the National Record for consecutive games with 100 or more points, which is now 16.

"I think by the way you see them playing, they're mindset is to enjoy the game and enjoy everyday," Wise said. "We didn't even talk about the record or anything like that before the game. We talked about the same things as far as playing hard and everybody being together as a team."

The original record of 15-straight was held by the 2009-2010 version of the Jack Yates Lions, which is considered by many to have been the greatest Houston-area high school team of the past decade. The Lions that year went 34-0 and won the Class 3A State Championship.

Prior to Yates holding the National Record, it was 14-straight games by Hobbs High School from the 1969-1970 season.

If Yates maintains this pace of scoring 100 or more points the rest of the regular season, the streak will reach 18. If the Lions carry it through the 2020 playoffs - which takes seven wins to capture a state title - the run could reach 25.
